Diamond On The Blue Ridge Parkway

Best in Show at the 2018 Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition*

The solar eclipse of August 21, 2017, dubbed "The Great American Eclipse" was a total solar eclipse visible within a band that spanned the entire contiguous United States, passing from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts. Prior to this event, no solar eclipse had been visible across the entire contiguous United States since June 8, 1918. In fact, not since February 1979 had a total eclipse been visible from anywhere in the U.S. mainland.

My photo, which I call Diamond on the Blue Ridge Parkway was taken on August 21, 2017 at Mile High Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway at approximately 2:30 in the afternoon. I scouted the parkway for several days prior to the event in search of a location that would incorporate both the sky and the parkway. I knew the final image would involve a composite of two photos since most lenses used for landscapes, due to their wide angle of view will make objects such as the sun and moon appear very small. I wanted the final image to appear just like you would see it if you were there.

Set up/Equipment

I used two different lenses, one for the landscape and one for the eclipse. The landscape image was taken with a 14mm f/2.8 lens at 1/4000 shutter speed, f/11, ISO 100. The eclipse was taken with a 250mm f/3.5 lens at 1/320 shutter speed, f/5.6, ISO 100. Both images were taken with a Nikon D610 DSLR.

The landscape shot was taken with a wide-angle lens prior to the event when conditions were brighter in order to get a wider point of view and capture the most detail. The solar eclipse was taken with a telephoto lens so that the sun would appear its normal size. The two images were later merged.

Electric Moon

Finalist in the 2018 Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition* — Landscape category

Set up/Equipment

This picture was taken July 7, 2017 from the Appalachian Trail at Roan Mountain, TN. I had hiked up the AT to Grassy Ridge Bald to catch a sunset and was hiking out just after dark when I saw a person stopped on the trail looking south toward NC. I stopped to look as well and this awe inspiring site unfolded before my eyes. The moon was full, bright and clear and just below it, a summer thunderstorm was in full progress. These two phenomenon are rarely seen at the same time and as I gazed at it, I remembered that I was a photographer, set up my camera on a tripod and began to shoot.

The photo is a blend of two shots, one for the storm at 4 second exposure to capture the lightning strike and surrounding landscape and the other of the moon at 1/125th of a second to get the detail of the moon.

Picnic Under The Stars

Winner of the 2016 Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition* — Blue Ridge Parkway category

Set up/Equipment

The shot was taken from Waterrock Knob near mile marker 451 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Waterrock Knob stands at 6,292 feet and is a popular place for star gazers along the parkway. I had been to this spot many times during the day and was out one night taking pictures of the night sky when I saw this picnic table with the back drop of the Milky Way.

This photo is a single exposure of 20 seconds, I used a small flashlight to help illuminate the picnic table.
